Teaching punctuation

Punctuation will take some time and effort to teach to your child. When teaching punctuation, take some books or magazines off the shelf and show your child how different symbols mean different things when placed in a sentence. You can also demonstrate how certain symbols “sound” – for example, the comma might indicate a pause, while a period would indicate a break in speech. Demonstrate the intonation you use when you use a question mark, or the forcefulness of the exclamation point. With practice, and lots of being read to, your child will gradually learn punctuation.
