The objective of this lesson is to help your child learn to recognize and write the capital letter Y.
At the end of the lesson your child will be able to recognize the letter Y and say its name.
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.
What you will need:
- A piece of paper
- At least four crayons
What to do:
- Stand on the floor and hold out your arms, making your body look like a letter Y. Have your child imitate your ‘body sculpture’!
- Now take three of the crayons and arrange them on the table to look like a letter Y. Tell your child that this symbol is the letter Y and it makes the sound ‘yuh’.
- Have your child draw a Y on the piece of paper with the last crayon, using the crayons that you have arranged as a letter Y as a guide.
- Have your child draw some more colorful letter Ys on the page.
If your child learns the capital letter Y right away, introduce the lower case letter y.
Print out the attached worksheet. Ask your child to complete the worksheet by themselves. Feel free to help them if they get stuck or ask any questions.
In order to see if your child has achieved the goal of this lesson, write a few different letters including the letter Y on the piece of paper. Give your child a crayon and ask them to find and circle the letter Y with the crayon.
