Download the capital letter X worksheet

Time requirement

20 minutes.

Grade level

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.

Introductory activity

What you will need:

  • A stick of chalk
  • Some sidewalk to draw on

What to do:

  1. Go outside with your child, some chalk and a few cubes of ice. Find a nice empty space on the sidewalk.
  2. Draw the letter X on the sidewalk with the chalk. You can demonstrate how the X looks like two crossed lines.
  3. Tell your child that this is the capital letter X and tell them the sound it makes (‘ecks’).
  4. Tell them that the word ‘Xylophone’ starts with the letter X, and draw a xylophone on the sidewalk with the chalk.
  5. Though not many other English language words start with the letter X, you can demonstrate to your child words that feature the letter X, such as ‘exit’, ‘Mexico’, or ‘Texas’.

Challenge

If your child learns the capital letter X right away, introduce the lower case letter x.

Reinforcement activity

Print out the attached worksheet. Ask your child to complete the worksheet by themselves. Feel free to help them if they get stuck or ask any questions.

Evaluation

In order to see if your child has achieved the goal of this lesson, write a few different letters including the letter X on the sidewalk. Give your child the chalk and ask them to circle the letter X.
