Objective

The objective of this lesson is to help your child learn to recognize and write the capital letter W.

Goal

At the end of the lesson your child will be able to recognize the letter W and say its name.

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.

Introductory activity

What you will need:

  • A piece of paper
  • A blue crayon

What to do:

  1. Draw the letter W on the piece of paper with the crayon and ask your child to repeat its name.
  2. Ask them to draw water on the paper with the blue crayon. You can show them that to draw water, you can draw a series of wavy blue lines.
  3. Write “Water” underneath the drawing.
  4. Show them that the word ‘water’ starts with the letter W.
  5. Tell them the sound that W makes is ‘wuh’.

Challenge

If your child learns the capital letter W right away, introduce the lower case letter w.

Evaluation

In order to see if your child has achieved the goal of this lesson, write a few different letters, including W, on the piece of paper and have them circle the letter W.
