Objective

The objective of this lesson is to teach your child to recognize and write the capital letter P.

Goal

At the end of the lesson your child will be able to recognize the letter P and say its name.

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.

Introductory activity

What you will need:

  • A piece of paper
  • A pencil

What to do:

  1. Draw the letter P on the piece of paper and ask your child to repeat it.
  2. Ask them if they know of any words that start with the sound ‘puh’. Tell them it is the sound that P makes.
  3. Look around the room and find things that start with the letter P, like potatoes, pants or pillows. Then write and show your child the words on a piece of paper. Remember that the pencil and piece of paper both start with the letter P!
  4. Have your child circle the P in each word that you write on the paper.

Challenge

If your child learns the capital letter P right away, introduce the lower case letter p.

Print out the attached worksheet. Ask your child to complete the worksheet by themselves. Feel free to help them if they get stuck or ask any questions.

Evaluation

In order to see if your child has achieved the goal of this lesson, write a few different letters including P on the paper and have them circle the letter P.
