Time requirement

20 minutes.

Grade level

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.

Introductory activity

What you will need:

  • A wipe board
  • A dry erase (not permanent) marker

What to do:

  1. Draw the letter G on the wipe board and ask your child to repeat the sound it makes (‘guh’).
  2. Ask them to try to draw the capital letter G on the wipe board. Guide their hand to help them write it.
  3. Write “Goat” on the wipe board and circle the G. Tell them that the “G” usually makes the “guh” sound. You can also try to draw a picture of a goat, to associate the letters with the word.
  4. Have your child draw things on the wipe board that start with the letter G, such as a girl, a goat, or a giraffe. Have them repeat the associated words and the pronunciation of the letter G.

Challenge

If your child learns the capital letter G right away, introduce the lower case letter g.

Reinforcement activity

Print out the attached worksheet click here for useful tips. Ask your child to complete the worksheet by themselves. Feel free to help them if they get stuck or ask any questions.

Evaluation

In order to see if your child has achieved the goal of this lesson, write a few different letters including G on the wipe board. Give them the dry erase marker and ask them to circle the letter G.
