The objective of this lesson is to teach your child to recognize and write the capital letter D.

At the end of the lesson your child will be able to recognize the letter D and say its name.

Introductory activity

What you will need:

  • A piece of paper
  • A pencil

What to do:

  1. Draw the letter D on the paper with the pencil and show it to your child.
  2. Tell your child that it’s the letter ‘D’ and the sound that it makes is ‘duh’.
  3. Ask them to repeat your pronunciation and ask them to try to draw their own letter Ds.

Challenge

If your child learns the capital letter D right away, introduce the lower case letter d.

Reinforcement activity

Print out the attached worksheet. Ask your child to complete the worksheet by themselves. Feel free to help them if they get stuck or ask any questions.

Evaluation

In order to see if your child has achieved the goal of this lesson, write a few different letters including D on the piece of paper. Give your child a crayon and ask them to circle the letter D.
