Are you going anywhere special for **Christmas**? Yvonne and I are looking forward to taking a short hop across the pond (also known as the Atlantic Ocean) to stay with my parents in Florida for Christmas. While Florida may not be as warm in December and January as it is during the summer months, the weather there will certainly be a change from the weather we’ve been experiencing this fall in northern France! We’re looking forward to it!

### Christmas Common Core math

Here is a packet designed to **assess the Common Core math skills** of students according to the Common Core State Standards for five separate grade levels: first, second, third, fourth and fifth. The goal of these worksheets is to test the progress of students in a fun and engaging manner. The activities have been broken down by subject area; for example, one set of three worksheets might concentrate on addition, another set on subtraction, another on fractions, another on geometry… the sections are named differently depending on which Common Core domains are found in which individual grade level.

### Common Core posters for the Christmas holiday included

These packets also contain Common Core posters with a Christmas theme for each of the sections that you might study in your classroom.

## First Grade

All Common Core state standards for first grade mathematics are covered in this packet.

## Second Grade

All Common Core state standards for second grade mathematics are covered in this packet.

## Third Grade

All Common Core state standards for third grade mathematics are covered in this packet.

## Fourth Grade

All Common Core state standards for fourth grade mathematics are covered in this packet.

## Fifth Grade

If you do use these packets and find them useful, please let me know – I’d be really glad to hear it! And if you have any suggestion for any improvements or any other products that we might make for your students, please let us know that as well.

Happy holidays!

It’s time to have a little fun decorating a colorful Christmas tree by using skills aligned with the Common Core State Standards Initiative. Today I’ve whipped up a **Christmas Tree addition activity**, where students can add ornaments, bells, Christmas lights, candy canes and more to a bare fir tree. Over the next few posts I’ll be adding Christmas tree activities for more skills – namely subtraction, multiplication and division – so that other grade levels can join in on the fun.

### Adding ornaments to the tree

Using this worksheet is easy – simply read the instructions, and then add that many indicated Christmas items to the undecorated Christmas tree. As you continue to add ornaments and other items to the tree, it will really start to sparkle. Don’t forget to use lots of different colors and patterns to decorate the tree!

### First and Second Grade Common Core Standards for Mathematics

This lesson falls under:

**1.OA.5**, Operations & Algebraic Thinking for first grade:

Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

**1.OA.6**, Operations & Algebraic Thinking for first grade:

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

**2.OA.2**, Operations & Algebraic Thinking for second grade:

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

The **Christmas holidays** are coming, and what better way to get into the mood for the fun and festivity of Christmastime than by working on math problems with a Christmas theme! Okay… truth be told, I can think of *quite a few* better ways to celebrate the holidays than working on math problems. Still, if you’re going to be practicing math skills according to the **Common Core State Standards Initiative**, you may as well have some fun with them by injecting your math problems with a little holiday cheer!
